Derek Jeter and Me: When We Were Rookies

By Tom Campisi

17 years. Are you serious? Well, it’s true. This spring will mark the 17th anniversary of my tenure as publisher of the Tri-State Voice. Here’s a little perspective of how long a time that really is:

  • In 1995, Derek Jeter was a rookie. No World Series rings. No Yankee records. Just a skinny shortstop making his debut.
  • Bill Clinton was in his first term as President.
  • The Internet was a novelty, not a necessity. I had just signed on with my first e-mail account.

While my first issue in June of ’95 may seem like a long, long time ago, in some ways it seems like only yesterday—and maybe it’s just as relevant today. The lead story examined the liberal bias in news coverage and asked the question, “Is the Media Telling the Whole Truth?” The answer to the question is the reason Tri-State Voice was created in the first place—to counter a liberal bias with a biblical perspective. The other Page 1 stories featured George McGovern’s work with Athletes in Action as a chaplain with the New York Mets and New York Jets, and the summer concerts in Ocean Grove, NJ (I think Petra was playing—wow, that was a long time ago).  George McGovern has since moved on to the Giants and the Yankees, Jeter became “Mr. November,” and the Ocean Grove Camp Meeting is still hosting concerts.

As I look back, it’s been a great honor to serve the Metro New York region as a publisher and print stories that encourage, inform, and unify the Body of Christ. By God’s grace, I’ve had the privilege of meeting some special people and covering some fantastic ministries that are making a difference in their communities.

A NEW ERA

Even though I’ve been at this for a decade and a half, I do, however, feel like Tri-State Voice is just getting started, especially in light of the technology at our disposal. In 2012, the Internet is no longer an option or a luxury, it’s the center of communication. For the last couple of years, we’ve been working on this blog/news/events site.

In addition to news and feature articles, TriStateVoice.com will facilitate a roundtable of local writers, thinkers, pastors, and ministry leaders. With a diversity that reflects the local Body and a unique, intelligent, anointed edge, I am sure you will click through many times a week and want to share this link with your friends.

We are currently offering affordable advertising sponsorship packages that include banner ads, print ads, and networking possibilities. Sponsors will enable us to effectively minister in the world’s most influential Metro area. For the last 17 years, we have reached thousands each month in our print edition. As we expand our borders and venture online into a world of exponential possibilities with TriStateVoice.com, we will influence even more people and have a greater impact.

If you currently advertise with us or have advertised with the Voice in the last 17 years, thank you. We couldn’t have made it this far without the ministries, businesses, and event promoters who have place ads on these pages each month. If you have never advertised with us, we’d love to meet you and talk about our new sponsorship packages. Call our office at (201) 644-7062 or send me an e-mail. You can even reach me on Facebook—and that’s a media we never would have fathomed way back in 1995.
